How KDP royalties are calculated

For a paperback sold on Amazon.com, your royalty is the royalty rate × your list price − the printing cost.

  • The rate: 60% for a list price of $9.99 or more, 50% below $9.99
  • Printing a black-ink paperback: up to 108 pages, a flat $2.30 (or $2.84 for large trims); from 110 pages, $1.00 + $0.012 a page (or $0.017 a page for large trims)
  • Large trims are wider than 6.12 inches or taller than 9 inches — 8.5 × 11 and 8 × 10 coloring books are large
  • Example: a 100-page 8.5 × 11 coloring book at $9.99 costs $2.84 to print and pays 60% × 9.99 − 2.84 = $3.15 a book

Kindle ebooks pay 35% at any price from $0.99, or 70% from $2.99 to $12.99 minus a small delivery cost for the file size ($0.15 a megabyte).

How Etsy fees are calculated

  • A listing fee of $0.20 for each item sold
  • A transaction fee of 6.5% of the price plus the shipping you charge
  • Payment processing in the United States: 3% + $0.25 an order
  • Offsite Ads: 15% (or 12%) only on orders that came from an ad Etsy showed outside Etsy

Questions about royalties and fees

What price should a KDP coloring book have?

Most 8.5 × 11 coloring books sell between $6.99 and $9.99. At $9.99 or more KDP pays 60% instead of 50%, so a 100-page book earns about $3.15 at $9.99 but only about $1.65 at $8.99.

How much does KDP charge to print a 100-page book?

In black ink, from 24 to 108 pages the price is flat: $2.30 for regular trims and $2.84 for large trims like 8.5 × 11. From 110 pages it is $1.00 + $0.012 a page (or $0.017 for large trims): a 200-page 6 × 9 book costs $1.00 + 200 × $0.012 = $3.40.

Is the 70% Kindle royalty always better?

Not always: it is only for prices from $2.99 to $12.99, and a delivery cost is taken for the file size. For a large file at a low price, 35% can pay more — the calculator shows both.

How much does Etsy take from a $5 digital download?

About $0.20 + $0.33 + $0.40 = $0.93 in the United States, so you keep about $4.07 — less when the sale came from an Offsite Ad.

Does the calculator work for other countries?

It uses Amazon.com's printing costs and Etsy's US payment fee. Other marketplaces and countries have their own numbers — check them in KDP and Etsy.
